Les militaires avaient pour mission de sécuriser cette région investie par les voleurs de zébus (ou dahalo) et surtout de capturer Remenabila et sa troupe, auteur du vol de plusieurs milliers de zébus et de l'assassinat de 12 gendarmes. Betroka, the district's county seat, has hosted most of the special forces of the Malagasy army involved in the Tandroka operation between September 2012 and February 2013.
